Plenty of ways we can do better. . .
Recently I was reading an article in Plenty about a celebrity who had gone green. . . Most of the greening the celebrity had undergone consisted of things that we have done long ago like changing light bulbs and using re-useable shopping bags. One comment particularly struck me however. The celebrity said that she no longer patronized restaurants that used styrofoam. That struck me as a little odd. It had never occurred to me that I should punish my favorite restaurants because they provided me with sloppy liquid curries that I ordered and love so very dearly or that I should give up those wonderful curries and smothered salads etc.
Now some of you really hard core greens out there might be saying, "Wait a minute. . ." but my husband and I cultivated the habit of taking our plastic wear ( I know its plastic, but we have been using the same containers for going on 15 years now) with us to the restaurant weather its to take home left over or pick up take out. We have found only 1 restaurant that was not willing to accept this and we have stopped patronizing it but most restaurants are very happy to let you load your own food into your own plastic wear. No waist, no leaks, no need to repack it when you get home and nothing additional is consumed like with disposable containers. Styrofoam or otherwise. Its a great solution and I would like to encourage everyone to give it a try.
In some ways, this first article is what we are trying to make Greenknowe about. Its about all the stuff you can do after you have switched to organic produce and florecent light bulbs.

To go containers
SF is now requiring that all to go containers be compostable. If you personally are having an event or camping, etc that you really need to use "disposable" partyware rainbow grocery has a great line of stuff all made from renewable resources and some are compostable as well. Smart and final has also begun to carry renewable/compostable party ware as well and the prices are very competitive!
Why dont we do this in Brisbane???
